PERFECTION AT A PRICE . . .
After the devastating War of Immortality almost completely destroyed the human species, the communist town of New Standard has learned from the mistakes of its ancestors. For sixty years, there has been no war, no hunger, no wealth imbalance, no hardship. Every citizen is guaranteed a spouse, two children, sixty peaceful and fulfilling years to live, and a specific community role. And each year at the Role Assignment Ceremony, an Age-Seventeen female is selected to participate in the annual community Ritual--she's led into the mysterious Renewal House, and she never comes out.
Lit Journal Blurb Sample: Willow Springs 73
Willow Springs 73 features prose and poetry by Diana Joseph, Gary Copeland Lilley, Joseph Millar, and Stacey Richter. In an interview, Major Jackson discusses identity politics in poetry: "I think what we’re realizing is that there are not homogenous kinds of experiences for ethnic and racial groups in America. There’s many different ways of being a woman, or being an African American." Joyce Carol Oates addresses the importance of maintaining a “roiling”conversation about women writers and women’s rights: "With abortion rights, people think a battle’s been won, but actually it hasn’t. It’s a ceaseless struggle even to have voting rights for people; in the South they’re trying to take them away again. Nobody would believe that’s happening. So too with women and literature."

FROM PAGE TO STAGE: A THEATRICAL READING
Performance and the written word collide! Experience the witch's story from "Hansel and Gretel," reflect on the makings of the perfect mint julep and a good Kentucky man, and follow along as a partygoer can't remember where he left his wife. This performance takes the spirit of "All the world's a stage" to heart with a winning combination of stellar actors and fresh voices in poetry and prose. Willow Springs and The Writer and Actor Collaborative (WAAC) are teaming up to bring you a literary reading performed and directed by local Spokane actors and directors, bringing the power of the page directly to the stage.

Willow Springs 74 features prose and poetry by Kim Addonizio, Melissa Kwasny, Jeffrey Bean, and Robert Wrigley. In an interview, Andre Dubus III discusses the balance of power and vulnerability in memoir: "Once you punch someone as hard as you can in their face, you've learned to violate an intimacy of another human being, and you'll always know how to do it. And, frankly, it's hard not to reach for that. It's like having a gun; it's like having a nuclear bomb."
