After the devastating War of Immortality almost completely destroyed the human species, the communist town of New Standard has learned from the mistakes of its ancestors. For sixty years, there has been no war, no hunger, no wealth imbalance, no hardship. Every citizen is guaranteed a spouse, two children, sixty peaceful and fulfilling years to live, and a specific community role. And each year at the Role Assignment Ceremony, an Age-Seventeen female is selected to participate in the annual community Ritual--she's led into the mysterious Renewal House, and she never comes out.
